Finance Minister Chidambaram has asserted that the economy is going to become stronger due to efforts of the present UPA government. Addressing the media in New Delhi today he said the Current Account Deficit – CAD – has been brought down significantly to 32 billion dollars as against the previous year's 88 billion. Fiscal deficit has been contained within the target of 4.6 percent of GDP in 2013-14. But,there has been shortfall in overall tax collection in the last fiscal. He said the news on Current Account Deficit is extremely good. He said, CAD has not only been fully financed but 28.5 billion dollars has also been added to the reserves. He said CAD was at 4.7 per cent of GDP in 2012-13 and it is only in 1.7 per cent in 2013-14. He said these are good signs. Talking about tax collections, Chidambaram said in the direct taxes segment, government has collected about 5,500 crore rupees more than the revised estimate of 6 lakh 41 thousand during 2013-14. On indirect taxes, government has achieved the target for Customs, but in the Central Excise and Service Tax segments there has been a shortfall. To a query on recent rise in stock market attributed to Modi factor, Chidambaram said, if that is true then every dip in the emarket should also be attributed to Modi factor.
