Chidamabram to visit quake-hit places in Sikkim ; Death toll in state rises to 71

Home Minister P Chidambaram will visit quake-hit Sikkim today to take stock of the relief and rescue work there. Earlier AICC General Secretary Mr.Rahul Gandhi visited the state. He assured that Sikkim will get all assistance from the Centre to cope up with the Sunday's Earthquake.The Centre has constituted an Inter-Ministerial team to visit the affected places in Sikkim to take stock of the damage due to the the earthquake. According to the Home Ministry official, the team will visit the affected places and give its recommendations for assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund. The Sikkim Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling announced that the State Government will complete the ongoing assessment of the losses and damages within ten days. Addressing a press conference at Samman Bhavan in Gangtok he said the report will be submitted to the Centre, demanding adequate relief package for Sikkim. He assured that the State will be able to welcome the tourists again within the next 10-15 days. Meanwhile, the death toll in Sikkim has now risen to 71. The worst affected North district alone accounts for 53 deaths. Relief and restoration work is in full swing in the state.
