Supreme Court on Monday acquitted three alleged terroristssentenced to life imprisonment in the case relating to thebomb blast at the RSS office in Chennai in 1993. 11people were killed. A Bench of Justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjarsaid in a judgement the prosecution failed to conclusivelyestablish the guilt of Abubucker Siqqique, M P Rafiq Ahamedand Hyder Ali of blasting the building in Chennai's M VNaidu Street. The apex court said the trial court had erroneouslyconvicted the trio on the basis of their confessionalstatement of procuring gelatin and detonators for committingthe offence, though there was no trace of the said material,as rather explosives like RDX and PETN were used in the daringattack. The trio were earlier convicted and sentenced to lifeimprisonment by a designated court on June 21, 2007, formurder, criminal conspiracy and various other offences underthe TADA Act on the basis of the chargesheet filed by CBI. The apex court said excepting the confessionalstatements there was no other independent evidence withregard to the participation of the accused in the conspiracyand the particular role played by them.
