Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan has said, a major ecological disaster was averted due to the timely unloading of the cargo of a ship involved in the collision on 28th last month near Chennai coast. He reviewed the current status of the oil spill along the coast and sea with officials close to the Kamarajar Port, Ennore. He told media persons that the leakage of oil is only due to the damage caused to the fuel line of the ship.

He further said, as most part of the spillage converged on the shores, suction pumps could not be put to use fully. Mr Radhakrishnan said a full-fledged inquiry has been ordered to look into the incident. Meanwhile, the Indian Oil research and development team has started treating the removed oil sludge by mixing them with sand and microbes to disintegrate the oil residues.
