As the North East Monsoon is intensifying in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Chennai Mylapore experienced a record 30 centimeter rain in just 12 hours since last evening. It is the highest ever rainfall witnessed in the city this year so far. The downpour led to inundation in many areas of the city, crippling vehicular traffic in the night. <br/><br/>However, stagnant water subsided in most areas as rain relented since this morning. Weather forecast by the Meteorology Department says coastal Tamil Nadu is expected to get widespread rainfall in the next 24 hours as well. Some areas in interior districts are also expected to witness moderate rain. <br/><br/>The Area Cyclone Warning Centre of the MET Department in Chennai Mr Balachandran told press, very heavy rain is expected in some parts of coastal districts, as the low pressure area is still lingering over the South West Bay spread over Srilankan and Tamil Nadu coasts. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the rain last night reminded memories of the 2015 December flood in the minds of the public. Residential areas where serving and former chief ministers reside also were briefly engulfed by several inches of water. Many of the city suburbs in Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur are still reeling under storm water. <br/><br/>Ministers have been put in charge of all the zones of Chennai Corporation to oversee relief measures. As more rain is in the offing for two more days, control rooms are functioning twenty four by seven in most districts. With yesterday's pounding downpour, the state has got an average 19 centimeter rainfall this season so far, which is just one centimeter short of the long term average for the period.
