In Chennai, one person was killed, ten others injured and the fate of other construction workers are yet to be ascertained in the building collapse today evening. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has said that arrangements have been made by the State Government to rescue all those who are trapped inside immediately.
A team from National Disaster Relief Force also has been pressed into service. More than 12 fire tenders are at work to rescue those trapped inside the debris.
Till now eight persons have been rescued and are admitted at the Ramachandra Hospital which is situated nearby the accident site. Doctors and ambulance services are at at the spot to provide immediate medical releief.Jayalalithaa has ordered an enquiry into the accident.
Chennaiites were relieved of the heat even as there was heavy rains from 3.30 this evening.
But the happiness was short lived as the news of the collapse of the ill fated building started trickling down since five pm. More than 100 labourers had assembled at the building to collect their salary today according to several witnessed. It was a horrible scene as the huge buillding had collapsed into a concrete rubble and the officials who had rushed to the spot had a difficult time to start the rrelief work.
Rescue work has been delayed due to the night and the narrow approach roads to the accident site. A worker who fled from the scene on seeing the collapse after the thunder strike said that those who have been rescued had lost their hands or legs.
