Exactly a week after the Mumbai triple blasts, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan chaired a meeting of the state’s security commission on Wednesday to review the state’s security apparatus. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai after the cabinet meeting held earlier today, Mr. Chavan said that in order to prevent terror attacks, Mumbai’s security and surveillance system will be strengthened further. Speaking specifically on the CCTV issue, Mr. Chavan said that the state government had appointed PriceWaterHouse Coopers as the Project Management Consultant and the Bombay First Group as an advisor to look into the acquisition and installation of CCTV cameras for Mumbai. He informed that the company was ready with an ‘Expression of Interest’ application which will soon be floated. The issue of CCTV camera was also discussed at the security commission meeting, in which cyber security expert Vijay Mukhi asked the government to first put in place the optic fiber network. Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the security commission, opposition leader, Mr. Eknath Khadse said that several suggestions to improve the state’s infrastructure to fight against terror were discussed in the meeting. He added that the government should now implement these suggestions as soon as possible and added that the Chief Minister should hold more frequent and timely review meetings of the state security commission. The security commission appointed after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack consists of 80 members including the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, State Home Minister, Leader of the Opposition, officers from the three defence services, state police officials and security experts; all of whom were present today.
