Chasnala coal mine disaster: 2 ex-IISCO officials jailed

In Jharkhand, a local court in Dhanbad, has awarded one-year imprisonment to two former Indian Iron and Steel Company, IISCO officials in connection with a coal mine disaster in Chasnala colliery 37 years ago. The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dhanbad, Y K Singh, passed the order against R. Bhattacharya, the then manager of IISCO, and its former Project Officer, Deepak Sarkar, sentencing them to one year in prison.On December 27, 1975, 375 miners were trapped underground when water entered the mine at Chasnala collieryleading to the watery grave of many. Two other former officials, who were accused in the case, died long ago.
