In the olden days, it was celebrated for days and weeks. But in modern times, the celebration has been shortened to a day or two. In recent times, the festival is celebrated on the first Friday of March every year. Chapchar Kut is being celebrated to thank God after completion of their most arduous task of jhum operation – jungle clearing (clearing of the remnants of burning) at the beginning of a year.
