The Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to ascertain the safety aspects of Mullaperiyar dam will arrive in Idukki district of Kerala today. The high level team assisted by technical experts and officials will be inspecting the 116 year old dam tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has once again called upon Tamil Nadu to adopt a flexible stand on the Mullaperiyar dam issue considering the safety of about 40 lacs people in four districts of Kerala. Addressing a Mass Contact Programme in Alappuzha today, he expressed sadness on the content of the letter written by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha to the Prime Minister on the issue.
AIR correspondent reports, the relay Satyagraha near the Mullaperiyar dam will enter the 5th year on Christmas day. Recently started agitations and Satyagrahas are continuing in different parts of Idukki district demanding reduction of water level to 120 feet and the construction of a new dam decommissioning the existing one.
