Chandigarh Administration orders a probe against Sacred Heart School

The Chandigarh Administration has ordered a probe against the Sacred Heart School which had expelled Ruchika Girhotra after her molestation by former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore. Education Secretary Ram Niwas said that a time bound probe has been ordered to ascertain the causes which led to the expulsion of Ruchika. He said that Sub Divisional Magistrate Prerna Puri has been made the inquiry officer and the task will be completed within a week's time. Mr Niwas said that though it was a very old case and most of the principals and members of the management have changed, but still the city administration has been able to dig out some circumstantial evidence which will be put on record before the public.

Meanwhile, prominent human rights lawyer, Ranjan Lakhanpal has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. The petition seeks action against the management of the city-based Sacred Heart School for having expelled Ruchika on flimsy grounds following her molestation in 1990 by senior Haryana cadre IPS officer Shambhu Prashad Singh Rathore. Ruchika died on 29th of December 1993 in hospital. The Petitioner has stated in the PIL that it is true that it was not only molestation of Ruchika, which led to her suicide, the incidents which took place after the incident like registration of false cases against Ruchika`s brother Ashu, harassment of the family by influential cop, expulsion of Ruchika from school and other incidents were all sequence of events which compelled her to commit suicide.
