In Jammu and Kashmir, an annual fair which brings the people of India and Pakistan together is being celebrated today along the Indo-Pak border in Ramgarh sub-sector of Jammu Division. The 320 year old Chamliyal Mela is celebrated on both sides of the border. Baba Chamliyal shrine is close to the Zero line in the Samba sector of Jammu division adjoining Pakistan’s Sialkot district in Punjab. As the area is located near the Zero Line, the area is also looked after by the BSF which has constructed a community kitchen and guest house for the pilgrims over there. The Gates of the Shrine were opened by BSF in the wee hours today for the devotees to pay their obeisance to the Baba.Thousands of people from within and neighbouring States had started arriving since yesterday for paying their respects to the Baba. Devotees are waiting in long queues to pay obeisance to the Great Saint.. People on both sides of the Indo-Pak border participate with great enthusiasm in the annual fair celebrated from the fourth Thursday of June every year.Sea of People assembled across the border at Pakistani village of Saidanwali, barely 100 meters from the Shrine of Baba Chamliyal located on Indian Side, waiting for the Shakar (Soil) and Sharbat(Holy Water)from the shrine. It is believed that the soil of this place has medicinal properties. People with skin ailments come to the shrine and rub themselves with the soil and Water from the well and then stand in the Sun. Administration on both the sides had made elaborate arrangements for the people participating in the Mela.The Border Security Force (BSF) for India and its counterpart Chenab Rangers of Pakistan facilitated people on either side to receive the holy ‘Shakkar’ and ‘Sharbat’. As devotees from Pakistan are not allowed to cross the Indo-Pak border, they had gathered at Saidawali village, located on the international border, from where they were provided Shakkar and Sharbat by BSF officers.
