Chad's President wins new term

President Deby of Chad has won a new five-year term in office. Results showed that he has won 89 per cent of last month's presidential vote. Election officials released results of the April 25 poll yesterday, which Mr. Deby was expected to win by a wide margin after the main opposition boycotted the election. Opposition leaders said they will not recognize the results. President Deby has ruled Chad since seizing power in a 1990 coup. Under his rule, the nation has become an oil producer, but remains one of the poorest in the world.
