CFTRI, Mysore will be documenting details of about 100 varieties of Indian food

As part of its efforts to protect traditional Indian food, the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore will be documenting details of about 100 varieties of Indian food, including five varieties of Idli, as part of Traditional Knowledge Digital Library project.Speaking to AIR on the sidelines of the Indian Science congress in Chennai today, Director of the Institute Dr V. Prakash said the ambitious project is a collaborative programme between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research , Ministry of science and technology and department of AYUSH, under the ministry of health and family welfare. Stressing the need for documenting the ingredients and procedure of making traditional Indian food, Dr Prakash said in the past Indians were fighting if someone filed patents on traditional knowledge but the strategy counter is to patent it. He said it is now knowledge transmission from scientist to society, Dr. Prakash said that CFTRI and M S Swaminathan Research Foundation have collaborating to put an end to chronic hunger in the Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput regions of Orissa. He said the objective of the initiative was to develop technologies for specific foods suitable for the people of this region and to provide them with food that was ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook and to meet both the macro and micro nutrients requirements.
