Centre will ensure safety & security of people from NE: Home Min

The government attaches highest importance to development of the North Eastern region as well as prevention of atrocities against the Scheduled tribes. Home Minister P Chidambaram said that Centre will take every step to ensure the safety and security of people of North eastern states.

In response to calling attention motion raised by leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha today, Mr. Chidambaram categorically stated that any citizen belonging to the North Eastern States is free to travel to and reside in any part of the country.

Mr. Chidambaram, however, said that Police and Public order is State subject and expressed confidence that all State governments will
discharge their Constitutional responsibilities and ensure the security of all people residing within that State.

The Minister said that there have been reports regarding racial profiling and discrimination against students from North Eastern States in various parts of the country.

Mr. Chidambaram said that Police force will be strengthened and English speaking police officers will be deputed in areas where north eastern students and people are residing in big numbers.

The Minister said that there is suggestion to set up a help line for such people.

Cutting across the party lines, members demanded security for North Eastern people; Samajwadi Party’s Mohan Singh asked reservation for North East students in various Universities. Congress, BJP, AGP, CPI, CPI-M, RJD and members from the North Eastern regions also spoke about their concern.

Some members asked about the local arrangements for their studies so they do not need to move for it to other states.
