The Centre welcomed the unilateral ceasefire by ULFA in Assam. Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram said in a statement in New Delhi that the government is expected to sign an agreement with the banned outfit for suspension of operations and also for facilitating early talks. He said ground rules for the agreement will be finalised in the near future.Mr. Chidambaram said the Centre has always expressed its willingness to hold a dialogue with any group that shuns violence, lays down arms and seeks a solution through peaceful democratic means. The pro-talk ULFA leaders led by Rajkhowa on Tuesday had announced a unilateral indefinite ceasefire to ensure peaceful atmosphere for political negotiations. The leaders of the outfit including its Chairman had met the Prime Minister and the Home Minister recently, expressing their keen desire to seek a solution to their demands.
