Centre today asked states to play an effective role for completion of road infrastructure projects in the country. Briefing reporters at the end of the day-long conference on Public Private Partnership in National Highways in New Delhi today, the Road Transport and Highways Minister Dr. C. P. Joshi said states will get 20 per cent of the budget grant fund for the projects for their involvement and time completion of these projects. He said that 16,000 kilometers of highways have been completed so far and another 15,000 are in different stages of completion. The Minister said that Government has decided to develop all single lane roads into double lane and the projects to be granted will be build through on turn-key basis. Dr. Joshi said, 21,000 crore rupees of private investment has been received in the road infrastructure which gives government additional revenue of 10,000 crore rupees to be spent in this area. He expressed hope that the investment in this vital factor of economy will continue. Our correspondent reports, fifteen hundred representatives from state governments, banks and other stake holders participated in the conference. Some of them raised concern about road safety on account of engineering issues while others pointed out the problems in acquisition of land and granting of loans. Many participants advocated for single window clearance system for expeditious and timely completion of road infrastructure projects.
