The Ministry of Rural Development has communicated to all states that rural population must continue to get work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, MGNREGA, in all seasons. Official sources in New Delhi said that the Ministry has sent letters to all state secretaries that not providing work will be liable for penal action and compensation. The Ministry's communication comes in the wake of reports that some states are going slow in execution of work under MGNREGA during peak farming season. MGNREGA ensures 100 days employment in a year to every rural household.
