Centre to set up panel on groundwater depletion issue in Ganga basin

The Centre will soon set up a Committee of Secretaries to tackle the issue of groundwater depletion in Ganga basin.The committee will comprise of Secretaries from Ministries of Rural Development Water Resources and Environment.<br/><br/>The announcement was made by Minister for Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharati today during a Ganga Chaupal at Narora in Uttar Pradesh on the occasion of World Environment Day. <br/><br/>She urged the people to plant more trees to address the critical issue of groundwater depletion. Ms Bharati suggested for planting of trees like Palash and Ashoka which contribute in recharging groundwater. <br/><br/>She said, ground water issue can be resolved in an economic and eco-friendly manner. The Minister said, the use of plastic material is a major cause of pollution to river Ganga and it should be stopped. <br/><br/>The Minister is currently on a three week Ganga Nirikshan Abhiyan from Gangasagar to Gangotri to personally monitor the progress of Namami Gange programme.
