The Centre has decided to set up an Enquiry commission into surveillance of a young woman by the Gujarat government. The Union Cabinet took the decision under the Commissions of Inquiry Act under which the Modi government has already set up a similar panel.
Official sources said, the Central Commission is likely to be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge and will be asked to submit its report within three months. The Centre's decision overrules the contention of the Gujarat government that the matter is a state subject and that it has already appointed a Commission to probe it.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has rejected the allegations of vendetta and politics behind setting up an Inquiry Commission to probe alleged snooping on woman in Gujarat. Talking to reporters in New Delhi last evening, Mr. Shinde said, the government is taking action on the basis of facts and is following the people's representations sent to the President in this regard.
Earlier, the BJP had termed the decision as politically motivated.
