Centre to set up committee to look into safety aspects of Koodankulam Atomic Power project

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured that the Centre will set up a Committee to look into safety aspects of the Koodankulam Atomic Power project being set up in Tamil Nadu.

The assurance was given by the Prime Minister to a team of political leaders and activists of the People’s movement against Koodankulam Atomic Power project who met Dr Singh at his residence in New Delhi on Friday.

Talking to reporters after the meeting CPI Leader D Raja said that the Prime Minister shared the concerns of the people in the region. He informed that the Committee will consist of representatives from the Centre, the State and members protesting against the project. The maintenance work at the project site will however continue.

AIR correspondent reports that the 22 member delegation was led by Tamil Nadu State Finance Minister Mr.O.Pannerselvam. Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office, V Narayanswamy, National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon and other senior officials were present in the meeting.
