The government has decided to set up a commission for Indian medicine which will help in increasing the country's share in the global herbal drug market. The Cabinet gave the approval for the setting up the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine which will set standards on Auyrveda, Siddha and Unani medicines. The Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said that this is bing done in the wake of increasing cost of modern health care drugs and demand of herbal medicines. The Commission will have its office in Gaziabad.AIR correspondent said that that the global herbal trade is pegged at 62 billion US dollars out of which while China share is 19 billion dollars, the India share if only one billion dollars.
