Centre to provide fortified rice, wheat- flour through PDS

The Centre is working on a plan to provide fortified rice and wheat- flour through the public distribution system to enhance nutritional values in food intake. Fortification means increasing the content of essential micro- nutrients in food items.<br/><br/>Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi Consumer Affairs,Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said, through the fortification of these items people will get nutritious food required for their b health. <br/><br/>He said, the government provides rice, wheat and Coarse cereals to the 81 crore population of the country under National Food Security Act on subsidized rate but there is lack of nutrients for which fortification is necessary.<br/><br/>Earlier, Mr Paswan and Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel released the draft Food Safety and Standards ( Foritification of Foods) Regulation,2016 during the National Summit on Fortification of Food. They also launched a Logo of the fortified food. <br/><br/>The regulation will cover wheat-flour, rice, milk ,edible oil and salt in which specified quantity of nutrients will be added. <br/><br/>Under the regulation, the food business operators will have to follow the standards for fortification of foods.<br/>Under it, every package of fortified food will have to carry the words ' fortified' the name of the fortificants and the logo for making a distinction between fortified and no-fortified food products.
