In a further effort to ensure barrier free access to persons with disabilities, states have been asked to send proposals for Central assistance. An official release said that the Centre will provide assistance for creating barrier- free environment in State Secretariats, Collectorates, Main Hospitals , Universities and other important Government offices. Central assistance will also be given for creation of Government Websites at the State and District levels. The centre has increased the allocation from 15-20 crore last year to 100 crores this year for the purpose. The move is in line with UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities calls for making buildings, work places, facilities including information, communication and other services to be made accessible the persons with disabilities on an equal basis. India is signatory to the convention.
