Centre to launch inactivated polio vaccine in national capital today

The Centre is going to launch inactivated polio vaccine, IPV injection as part of the global polio endgame strategy in the national capital today. The vaccine will be launched by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda as part of next step in India's universal immunisation programme to fight against polio in the country. According to the Ministry, the injectable vaccine IPV will be used alongside the oral polio to kill the polio viruses. It also said the progamme initially will cover six states in the first phase which includes, Uttar Pardesh , Madhya Pardesh , Bihar, Assam, Punjab and Gujarat. In second phase, it will encompass the four southern States including Maharashtra. IPV aims to prevent vaccine caused polio cases, where viruses used in OPV cause flaccid paralysis. Till date, India, like many other countries, has been relying on an OPV campaign-style programme several times a year to kill the polio viruses.
