The Centre has given go ahead green signal for holding peace talks with the banned ULFA outfit of Assam. This was stated by State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at a press conference in Guwahati on Friday. He said the Centre’s peace interlocutor P.C.Haldar is arriving on Saturday for the purpose. He appealed to the illusive Paresh Baruah-led anti-talk ULFA group also to join in the peace talk. He said eight other militant groups of the State have also agreed to sit for peace talks. Replying to a query, the chief Minister said as many as 86 people died due to Malaria and Encephalitis in five Upper Assam districts during last two weeks. 29 of them are confirmed to be died due to encephalitis. He said the State Health department has launched special vaccination and fogging operation in the disease-affected areas to kill mosquito. Medicated mosquito nets are also being distributed among the people. The Chief Minister said that the overall flood situation in nine districts of the State has improved considerable today following stopping of rains. He said over five lakh 77 thousand populations were affected in the current wave of floods in the State. Three people lost their lives. In the badly-affected Dhemaji district, the flood-hit people are still taking shelter in two relief camps. Disaster Management teams are rendering round-the-clock services among the flood- ravaged people.
