Centre to distribute 8 lakh seed of pulses to farmers free of cost

Centre has put target for distribution of around eight lakh seed minikits of newer varieties of pulses free of cost to the farmers during current financial year. Minister of State for Agriculture S S Ahluwalia said this in a written reply in Lok Sabha today. He said, for enhancing the production of breeder seed of pulses, over twenty crore rupees have been approved for 12 ICAR institutes and State Agricultural Universities. The Minister said, cluster frontline demonstrations of pulses in 31 thousand hectares have been allocated to 534 Krishi Vigyan Kendras for 2016-17. <br/><br/>The Minister also informed that 15 per cent of the allocation for pulses component of National Food Security Mission is earmarked for production of quality seed through states. An incentive of 25 rupees per kg is being provided for pulses seed production.
