Centre to create public awareness against food wastage

Government will create public awareness against food wastage through Jago Grahak Jago campaign. The Minister for Consumer Affairs Prof K V Thomas informed this in a press briefing after holding the first meeting on containing wastage of food in New Delhi on Thursday. The minister said food wastage has gained importance in the background of proposed Food Security Bill. Enormous food is wasted in marriages and other social gatherings in the country. Five star hotels too are discarding food. Prof Thomas said that to find out the size of food wastage in the country, the Indian Institute of Public Administration will be assigned the work of conducting a scientific survey. He said austerity measures will also be suggested to prevent food wastage in Government functions and by the FCI. He further added that temples, Panchayats, NGOs, charity institutions will be roped in to create awareness on food austerity.
