The Centre has plans to create additional storage capacity of twenty lakh tonnes through modern silos. This will be part of the 150 lakh tonnes new storage capacity being created under the Public Entrepreneurs Guarantee Scheme of Food Corporation of India. Speaking at a conference on food grain storage in New Delhi yesterday, Food Minister K.V.Thomas said, the Centre Warehousing Corporation is also creating 10,000 tonnes of temperature control storage facilities on pilot basis. He said, a new Special Purpose Vehicle will be created to undertake studies on food grain storage its handling and transport. It will also assess the requirement of cold chain infrastructure and try to involve private sector in this endeavor. A comprehensive study is also being conducted by the Planning Commission to suggest measures for creation of modern food grain storage infrastructure in the country.
