Centre to cover 6.5 cr rural poor families under NRLM

Centre will cover around 6.5 crore rural poor families under the revamped National Rural Livelihood Mission, NRLM to reduce poverty in the country. The scheme is aimed to bring substantial changes in the lives of the rural poor by providing self and skilled wage employment to raise their income. The restructuring of Swarnjayanti Gram SwarozgarYojana (SGSY) as NRLM was approved by the Union Cabinet on Thursday. <br/><br/><br/>Briefing reporters in New Delhi, the Union Minister for Rural Development Dr C.P Joshi said that the scheme will focus on creation of federation of Self Help Groups, SHGs from village level to district level to achieve the desired objectives. He said that at least one member from each rural BPL household is proposed to be brought under Self Help Group net over the next five years. <br/><br/>The Minister said 2 crore households have already been brought under the ambit of SHG net while the remaining households will be covered in next five years. The scheme provides for reimbursement of interest subsidy to SHGs who have taken loans upto one lakh rupees, provided they make prompt payments.
