Centre to consult DMK, others on vote in UNHCR over Lanka Tamil issue

Government today said, it will take a decision on the vote in United Nations Human Rights Council on the resolution against Sri Lanka after consulting DMK and other allies.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid disclosed this in Lucknow on Sunday.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting at Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said, if the US resolution on Srilanka contains a demand for credible investigation, the government will support it.

Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, V. Narayanasamy also told Reporters in New Delhi that the government is committed to the protection of Sri Lankan Tamils and the Prime Minister will take a call as and when required.

DMK chief Karunanidhi has said, India must move amendments to the US resolution to declare genocide and war crimes were committed by Sri Lankan Army and administrators.

In a letter to the Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Mr M Karunanidhi urged him to address the issue.

Earlier, he reiterated his party's warning to pull out of the Congress led UPA government at the Centre if the latter does not carry out the amendments to the US resolution against Lanka to be moved in the UNHRC later this month.

Meanwhile, protests by students and some Tamil organisations continue in Tamil Nadu against alleged genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka and condemnation of President Mahinda Rjapakse.
