The Centre will compensate soya bean farmers if their crops are damaged by frost now on wards. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar announced this in the Lok Sabha today. He agreed with the Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj that soya bean farmers in Madhya Pradesh have suffered losses in the last three years. Since there was no provision for compensation for losses to soya bean farmers because of natural calamities, now they will get it, said Mr. Pawar. He informed the House that the Centre will encourage the production of oil seeds in Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. In the eastern States, emphasis will be given on paddy cultivation in future, the Agriculture Minister added.
