Centre to build 1 lakh anganwadi centres every year over next 4 years

The government has decided to build one lakh anganwadi centres (AWCs) every year over the next four years so that four lakh such centres have their own children-friendly buildings by 2019. The earlier proposal was to set up 50 thousand AWCs per year in 2,534 most backward blocks in 11 states which have high malnutrition.<br/><br/>PTI quotes a senior official of the Ministry of Women and Child Development said there is an acute shortage of Anganwadi buildings even outside high-burden districts. <br/><br/>Therefore, a need was felt to include other areas also for construction of AWC buildings under the convergence of MGNREGA and ICDS. He said construction of one lakh anganwadi centres per annum for next four years would be necessary to overcome the shortage. <br/><br/>There are 13 lakh four thousand angwandis across the country of which more than 12 lakh do not have their own buildings.
