Centre to bear full expenditure for Brahmaputra dredging

The Centre will bear the full expenditure for the Brahmaputra dredging. Participating in an AIR talk show, Director of Inland Water Transport B B Dev Choudhury said that a total of 871 kilometer of the mighty Brahmaputra will be dredged. <br/><br/>He said that survey of 300 kilometers of the Brahmaputra has been completed so far by the state PWD department. The Director said that expressway will be constructed along the river after dredging. <br/><br/>He further said that Union Road Transport minister Nitin Gadkari has favoured to introduce river engineering at IIT to create experts in dredging. <br/><br/>The dredging will bring oppurtunities to Assam as the state will also get access to Chittagong port. He said that World Bank sanctioned 1 thousand crore rupees for the development of Inland water transport in Assam. <br/><br/>The Director informed that water taxi service will be introduced in Guwahati by this year.
