Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said, Centre is taking steps for the release of Indian fishermen lodged in Lankan jail. <br/><br/>Talking to media persons in Kanyakumari Sunday evening, he said that constant efforts are being made to solve the fishermen issue. <br/><br/>Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalithaa had written a letter urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene in the matter and ensure the release of Tamil fishermen.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, Tamil fishermen families in Nagapattinam, Rameswarm, Jagadapattinam are hoping that their fellow fishermen lodged in Lankan jail will be released before Pongal Tamil festival this Friday. <br/><br/>More than 100 Tamil fishermen are still languishing in Lankan jail as they were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the international maritime boundary line. <br/><br/>The Tamil fishermen want the government to take steps to ensure the release of more than 66 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka. <br/><br/>Usually, Sri Lanka releases Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jail before festivals as a goodwill gesture. <br/><br/>However the fishing boats of fishermen are detained as deterrent measure by Lanka.
