Centre taking all steps to remove toxic waste at Carbide factory: Home Min

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that the centre is taking all possible steps to remove the toxic waste lying in the premises of defunct Union Carbide factory at Bhopal. Mr. Chidambaram is heading a Group of Ministers (GOM) on Bhopal gas tragedy. While talking to media in Bhopal today he said that it is not correct to say that the government did not take any step to dispose off the waste. The Home Minister said that government did not spare any attempt to dispose off the toxic waste. He said the the toxic waste could not be disposed off in Gujrat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh due to objections of governments of these states. He said that GOM is going to meet in Delhi on Friday and a decision will be taken on a proposal of a German firm which has come forward to airlift the toxic waste to that country for safe disposal.

Mr. Chidambaram said that the government will pave the way for better equipping and manning of super specialty hospital at Bhopal for the gas victims Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research centre (BMHRC). He said that fast track recruitment will be done to fill the vacancies of doctors in the hospital.

Earlier Mr. Chadambaram, along with two other members of the GOM Union Ministers Salman Khursheed and V Narayansami visited BMHRC.
