The Centre has taken steps to ensure adequate availability of onion in the consumer market at reasonable prices. National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India-NAFED has been asked to import onion from other countries at best rates and offer the same for domestic consumption in the country.NAFED will procure 4 to 5 metric tonnes onion per day from mandis of Rajasthan and supply the same through its retail outlets and mobile vans in the national capital. In other parts of the country, NAFED has been asked to procure onions at best prevailing rates from the mandis of Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon in Nasik district of Maharashtra and offer them to all state marketing and supply federations at a nominal service charge of 2 per cent.
