Centre succumbs to pressure from Western countries on FDI, says BJP

The BJP on Wednesday charged the government with succumbing to the pressure from the Western countries on Foreign Direct Investment – FDI – issue and reiterated its opposition to the proposal of allowing it in multi-brand retail sector.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Senior Party leader, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi said that the government should either roll back or allow a discussion on FDI with a voting provision in Parliament.

He alleged that prominent multi-national players from US, France and Britain have been lobbying for an entry into the Indian market.

Dr Joshi rejected the government’s argument that the entry of FDI in the retail sector will benefit people and create more employment opportunities.

He also quoted examples from abroad to say that the entry of multi-national companies in retail sector will not help in curbing the food inflation.

Replying to a question, Dr Joshi ruled out any change in the language of his party’s notices on adjournment motion on FDI issue in retail sector.
