The Central government has started a mega scheme to clean the river.

One billion dollars have been approved from the World Bank to fund an eight-year project.

The focus is on clearing large stretches of the river heavily polluted by industrial effluents and domestic waste.

The accumulation of silt deposit, discharge of industrial effluents and domestic waste along the banks has worried the environmentalists along with the shrinking size of the river.

In Kanpur Utterpradesh and in Patna Bihar campaigns have been launched.
