Centre signs peace pact with UPDS in Assam

The Centre has signed a peace pact with an insurgent group, the United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), in Assam. Under it, the Karbi Anglong hill district will get more powers and a 350 crore rupees special financial package.

Describing it as a historic moment, Home Minister P Chidambaram said government is ready for dialogue with any group which shuns violence and puts its demands within the framework of the Indian Constitution.

AIR correspondent reports that the agreement, signed by the representatives of the Central and Assam governments and the United People's Democratic Solidarity in New Delhi came at the end of two-year long peace negotiations.
