Centre sets up GoM to consider amending existing laws to deal with honour killings

The government has decided to set up a group of ministers GoM to consider amendments in the existing laws to deal with the honour killings across the country. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.<br/><br/>Briefing media later, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said that the views of the state governments will also be taken on board on the issue. Mrs. Ambika Soni said that the government wants to bring in the amendments in the IPC and CRPC to bring the honour killings effectively under the law of the land. Mrs. Soni said that the amendments will be brought before the Parliament in the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament.<br/><br/>Later the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram also said that there is no question of any delay and the consultations will be completed before the monsoon session of Parliament. AIR correspondent says that the move by the government has come in the wake of a spurt in the incidents of honour killings.
