Centre sets up committee for review of NSSF

Following recommendations of the Thirteenth Finance Commission, government has set up a Committee headed by the Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Ms. Shyamla Gopinath, for a comprehensive review of the National Small Savings Fund, NSSF, structure, interest rate, tenor and other administrative matters. The Thirteenth Finance Commission, in its report, had made recommendations to provide debt relief to States. The Committe will review the small saving scheme, existing terms of loans extended from the NSSF to the Centre and States, administrative arrangement including cost of operation and incentives on small saving investments by the States. While making its recommendations, the Committee is expected to consider the importance of small savings within the overall savings in the economy especially its contribution in promoting savings amongst small investors and the importance of NSSF being a viable fund.
