The Centre is all set to launch a scheme of granting domestic LPG connections free of cost to the below poverty line, BPL families. Official sources said that the petroleum Ministry will soon approach the Union Cabinet with the proposal for the purpose .The scheme will cover around 35 lakh families every year. Under the scheme, government will subsidise to every BPL consumer 1400 rupees required as security deposit and the cost of pressure regulator. A senior official said that the oil marketing companies will be asked to share the burden of this subsidy by making provisions for funds under the Corporate Social Responsibility Scheme. The scheme was announced by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Union Budget for the current fiscal in February this year. 490 crore rupees are being provided for subsidising LPG connections for BPL families. About 5.5 crore new LPG connections are proposed to be released till 2015 to touch the figure of 16 crore customers, with most connections being released in rural areas.
