Centre serious on Rabha, Garo ethnic clashes along Assam-Meghalaya border

The Centre has taken serious note of the situation arising out of the continued ethnic clashes between Rabha and Garo communities in Goalpara and East Garo Hill districts along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The Joint Secretary (North East) in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs Mr. Shambhu Singh has arrived at Goalpara Monday morning to assess the ground situation. According to official sources, Mr. Singh will also meet the Assam Chief Secretary Mr. Naba Kumar Das at Dispur on Tuesday to work out plan to contain violence. The Assam Government has deployed ten additional Assam Police Service officers in Goalpara district to bring the situation under control. Five additional companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district, while, the Army also started patrolling the vulnerable areas. The Assam Government is in constant touch with the Government of Meghalaya to try and bring the situation under control. AIR Correspondent reports that indefinite curfew has been re-imposed at Dudhnoi Township in Goalpara district since last evening after killing of a person by miscreants in fresh violence and torching of several houses in retaliation by irate mob. The Assam Police also declared shoot-at-sight order in the area.
