The Centre has sought a report from West Bengal government on the incident of mob violence at Kaliachak in Malda last Sunday. A mob protesting against the alleged objectionable comments by a leader had recently resorted to violence in the district. <br/><br/>Buses and police vehicles were torched, with the Kaliachak police station also set on fire. Some public properties were also destroyed. The police, later, arrested 10 persons in this connection. The accused have been sent to six-day police custody by a district court. <br/><br/>Security has been tightened in the area. Police sources and local community leaders point out that the incident occurred four months before assembly elections that are scheduled to be held in West Bengal. <br/><br/>The organization that was holding the demonstration also indicated that the attackers seemed well planned and suddenly indulged in arson. <br/><br/>A BJP delegation, led by the party's lone MLA?,? was prevented from entering Kaliachak yesterday by the administration fearing further deterioration in the situation. The situation has currently been reported as normal.
