The Centre has revised the rates of foodgrains supplied under Mid Day Meal Scheme from Below Poverty Line, BPL rate to the rate applicable under National Food Security Act, NFSA for the 1st two quarters of the year 2016-17. In a statement the Food Ministry said, the foodgrains will be now supplied at NFSA rate of 3 rupees per kilo for rice and 2 rupees per kilo for wheat with effect from 1st April this year. The state governments and administrations of Union Territories have also been informed of the above decision today. <br/><br/>Under the Mid Day Meal Scheme, hot cooked meals are served to more than 10 crore children in nearly 12 lakh Government and Government aided elementary schools on all school days. The Scheme also has a provision for serving of meals to the students in the eligible schools during summer vacations in areas where drought is declared by States. The cost of food grains is fully borne by the Central Government. The rice and wheat are supplied by Food Corporation of India and in some cases by the State Food and Civil Supplies Corporations. <br/><br/>As mandated under the NFSA, 2013, the Mid Day Meal Rules, 2015 were notified in September, 2015 which made the MDM Scheme eligible for supply of foodgrains at NFSA rates for wheat and rice. Additional expenditure on subsidy arising out of the above decision will be borne by the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution.
