The government has come out with comprehensive guidelines for preparedness as well as mitigation steps in the event of Tsunamis. Unveiling in the guidelines of the National Disaster Management Authority in New Delhi on Friday the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan emphasised that the guidelines are an important step towards Tsunami risk management. While stressing the need to develop resilience to face Tsunami as part of routine safety culture, Mr. Chavan cautioned against false alarms. AIR correspondent says, the guidelines focus on early warning system for Tsunamis, capacity building, safety standards and engineering solutions apart from preparedness. In order to educate people on Tsunamis, the guidelines call for developing education tools, training programmes for teachers. Disaster related curricula on Tsunami hazards has already been introduced in class 8th, 9th and 10th in Central Board of Secondary Education and other school boards are expected to develop similar contents in their curricula. More than 11000 people died in Tsunami that hit the Indian coastline in 2004 on 26th of December. Thousands were rendered homeless. It was after this natural disaster that national Disaster Management Authority was set up to deal with all natural and man made disasters in the country. Since its inception in 2005 NDMA has come out with 16 sets of guidelines. The guidelines released on Friday emphasises on the need of island states to have their own State Disaster Response Force to respond to any emergency and having adequate communication equipment for establishing last mile connectivity. The guidelines also focus on the need to strengthen public awareness on tsunami risk and vulnerability among the coastal communities. The guidelines call for a mix of both traditional and modern technology in dissemination of early warning to disaster prone communities so that widespread destruction that was caused in December 2004 by Tsunami can be prevented in future.
