Centre rejects media reports of polio in India

The Centre today rejected media reports that a polio virus has resurfaced in India for the first time in 5 years. In a statement, Health Ministry said, that the virus detected in Secunderabad is vaccine derived polio virus (VDPV), and does not change the polio-free status of India. It also clarified that no children have been found to be affected by the detected virus in the nearby areas. The Ministry said,India has eradicated wild polio virus and it is more than 5 years that no wild polio virus has been detected. <br/><br/>The last case of polio was seen on 13th January, 2011. The Ministry said, as a precautionary measure against Polio, a special immunization drive is being held, covering high-risk areas of Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts, starting from 20th of June. Around three lakh children will be protected against polio using Inactivated Polio Vaccine . The special immunisation campaign will ensure all vulnerable children living in high-risk areas are given protection against polio.
