Centre refutes that farmers in Maharashtra being paid paltry sum of insurance claims under PMFBY

Centre has refuted media reports that farmers in Maharashtra were being paid a paltry sum of insurance claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. A detailed statement explains the case of a farmer named Pandurang Bhaskar Rao Kadam.
''
''While a certain section of the media falsely claimed that he had been paid a mere 37.31 rupees as compensation for one of his crops and 327 rupees for another; records show that the farmer has till date received an amount of 2080.40 rupees, which is almost four times the premium paid. The government has further said that this amount is only part payment and he may receive more money, once the final settlement of claims is completed.
''
''Citing a district-wise example, the Centre informed that 6.66 lakh farmer applications were received from Maharashtra's Parbhani district. While the premium paid by farmers accounted for nearly 48 crore rupees, compensation of around 113 crore rupees has already been paid till date. It added that many farmers in this district have received more than fifty thousand as insurance claims with one of them receiving 94,534 rupees before the final settlement.
''
''Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government has informed that it has received 79.53 lakh applications seeking compensation of losses incurred during Kharif 2022. Noticing that many farmers have sum insured, lower than one thousand rupees, the state government has announced that a minimum of one thousand rupees per claim will be paid against any unique farmer ID.
''
''The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is the third-largest crop insurance scheme in the world. As per official figures, farmers have paid a premium of 25,186 crore rupees in the last six years, while compensation of 1,25,662 crore rupees has been paid as on 31st October 2022.
