Centre raises assistance for construction of community toilets

The Centre has raised assistance for construction of community toilets from 27,000 rupees to 39,200 rupees per seat under Swachh Bharat Mission in urban areas. Assistance of 39,200 rupees for construction of public toilets per seat has also been made for which there was no provision earlier.<br/><br/>Besides, central support of 12,800 rupees per seat for construction of urinals have also been approved. <br/><br/>Urban Development Ministry revised the guidelines of the mission following demands of more central assistance by State governments and Urban Local Bodies. Under the new guidelines, 75 per cent increase in the central assistance for Municipal Solid Waste Management has also been approved. <br/><br/>As per the Ministry, under the mission, construction of over one crore individual household toilets and 5 crore community and public toilet seats and 100 per cent scientific management of municipal solid waste have been targeted. <br/><br/>It said, so far 115 towns and 8,103 municipal wards have become Open Defecation Free. Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat and Chandigarh have also resolved to become Open Defecation Free by March next year.
